General news.
Dad went for a stroll round the village today, as the weather has, for once been glorious. I persuaded him to take the camera and get some photos showing the differing aspects of Leire. There will be more to follow, if you want!
A bit of colour.
This is called Back Lane
The Green.
More to come..........

More? Yes please! I love the autumn colours.
What a great village you live in! Nice photos--please sir, can we have some more? The colors have not quite arrived here yet...
Great pics John....I hope you'll post more! Why do all villages have a "green"? What does it signify?
Beautiful!! Very similar to the village green here in Monton (Salford, Manchester), except that here it's bordered by the Bridgewater Canal with the occasional narrowboats passing by. The low Autumn sun in the sky now makes villages like ours so very picturesque. From childhood memories when I lived in SW Leics., Leire was always a lovely village which has certainly been captured in these photo's - please do post more!
Kevin in Salford,
(More usually replying to your friend Keith's blog!)
Wendishness, a good question.
The village green normally was originally an area of common land at the top of the heart of the village in front of the Parish Church. Usually it was intended to give a clear view of the church from all directions, thus placing the church as the focus of all village activities.
Here in Monton (Lancs) the original byelaws allowed such things as festive acivities (though I've found no reference to maypole dancing!) such as fairs, small scale markets, and the like, and even sheep grazing! Thankfully the area is now a preservation area and is basically open parkland.

Looks a bit like the village of Midsomer...it's the quite once you got to watch...

OMG.

sorry john g, i know, you think i'm a traitor.
BE NICE TO DI.
GG, RAOFLMAO!!
I love the lane. It is a joy to live in a green and pleasant land.
I have always associated maypoles with village greens and in the olden days there would be horse troughs for the hosses and stocks for the naughty people like John and Keith so that the virtuous - like us - could throw tomatoes at them. Such fun!
Thanks Kevin in Salford, I appreciate your feedback on what a village green was/is used for :)
Your dad took some lovely shots you live in a lovely village-it reminds me of my childhood!
