Puzzled!

I've just been watching the news. They were going on about the new Eurostar rail-link from St. Pancras. A marvellous piece of work, and long overdue, but what puzzles me is the statements on the news, and in the press, that; "Europe just got closer".

How can this be? Who moved, us or them?

Suggestions please.

The thought occurred to me how great the champagne bar would be for a blog meet but none of us could afford it.
Convenient though, even for the furriners.

I couldn't figure out how moving to a more northerly station could reduce the journey time but Bear (trainbuff) assures me that they have improved the track and the trains can go faster in England now. Pity the French have gone on strike at the same time as the opening.

Something to do with a the speed of the train and a reversal of Fitzgeralds contraction perhaps?

It's still quicker to fly though!

Bugger.........grumpy took my comment!!

OK, quick joke for you John:
What do you call an Indian standing on one leg?

Sandy, improving speed times hasn't "moved us closer", it's speeded things up a bit. £8 billion for twenty minutes! Top value!

beccy, not after customs and getting to the airport an hour or so before the plane takes off, etc etc, it isn't. and you can take whatever you want on the eurostar - liquids, the lot.

we're out to get inggerlund.

I think they mean it in a spiritual sense. After all, isn't Europe (or at least the EU) now one big happy family, where everyone has almost forgotten about those old-fashioned national boundaries and divisive stereotypes?

Well, at least until the smelly, lazy, onion-wearing frogs decided to spoil the party by going on strike, like they always do. I think we should re-route the Eurostar back to Waterloo to remind them who's boss! God bless Al Murray!

Lynx, the EU is NOT one happy family, far from it!

John, I fear I may not have introduced myself. I'm a high-flying, international, jet-setting business magnate.

Oh, hang on, you're not a bird that I'm trying to pull. OK, I'm a train-travelling, euro-commuting computer geek, who spends half his time in Belgium and the rest in the garden of England.

One big happy family? Sure, just like the Borgias.

Maybe they think that, since mainland Europe is a larger landmass, they will pull England in gravitationally. So in that logic, England is moving, but only because France sucks.

Just a theory... :)

John, just the one. She's married to a boy named Sue.

For me it got further away as Ebbsfleet is further away than Ashford.. That took 8 billion pounds of tax payers money....
