Garden news.

We have this plant in the front garden, right against the house called a Crinum. It throws up spikes of flowers, dozens of them. Big,beautiful blooms, and then dies back for the year.

Here are a couple of Dad's photos.

Crinum Powelli

Crinum

This plant flowers at an alarming rate!

It is a member of the lily family, and this one is about 4 feet tall.

Since I only grow vegetables, I appreciate the fabulous pictures of your dad's flowers.

Z is a sensible person! I think that they are of the species triffidus dionea muscipulus. Do they go "walk-abouts" at night?

Are they also known as painted ladies John

Pat said...

We had similar but we've lost the flowers and just have the leaves. Ours have a peculiar smell = like pear drops.

fatboy, i've checked and the only painted ladies I can find are butterflies and tattooed women!

John I have also been doing some checking and it appears that I am talking bollocks,it's pink ladies according to mother and the plants proper name is Nereens.I do apologise for being a twat, but then What would we do without them?

Z said...

They aren't nerines, because they flower on bare stalks. The leaves grow in spring and then die back during the summer. Also, they don't grow as tall as 4 feet.

I do grow some flowers.

They look a bit like a plant that we illegally brought back from Madeira (long story) when on our honeymoon - many years ago, called an agapanthius....

Gorgeous!

I don't think they're agapanthius - my wilderness has many.

My folks have a dear friend who calls them agathapanthius

Now Nerines ring a bell. John have a smell and see if it's pear drops please.

You were right in the first place John.

I looked it all up too to be sure before I said nerines flower on leafless plants. Agapanthus are usually blue to lilac or white, not true pink.

My Lily is just a foot tall.

Enough for you to pee up Murph!

Since I know absolutely nothing about plant names I can't join in but I did enjoy the photos. It makes up for the dearth of colour in my garden.
