Watercolour of Wells Cathedral.
My late Mums' favourite copper kettle.
The elephant on the beam was my Grans', if you can zoom in on the pic. that is embroidery.
We had the old open fire taken out, as it was getting too much for Dad, messing about clearing it out and lugging coal/logs around. The beam is from the farm house across the road, and dates from 1400. So I make the tree at least 150 years before that!
I don't know why this is here!!

Very cool. I love that brick.
I would love to share my mantelpiece - but guess what....I don't have one. All we have is a woodstove. I hate not having a mantel - especially at Christmas. There isn't anyplace to hang stockings.
So, send a picture of that!
John I've recently shown what's above my mantelpiece but I'll take a picture tomorrow, hopefully, in better light. I love the look of that old beam and the copper kettle (who keeps it polished?).
We drove past Wells cathedral on our way back from Wookey Hole last week. but I haven't been in it for many years.
Chris, Dad , my genie keeps it polished! That painting's a few years old now.
I'll send you a photo of mine tomorrow...better dust the mantlepiece first....LOL On the wall I have a photograph given as a gift by a blogfriend as a thankyou for helping with online charity fundraising. I love the embroidery on your wall....I used to do it a lot when I was younger...now I'm rapidly approaching "old lady" mode perhaps I should take it up again...LOL
Have sent you mine. I love fireplaces - we have six and the one in the bedroom is an iddy biddy little thing. Nice to have somewhere to hang more Christmas stockings than we are entitled to!!
We don't have a fire place or a mantle but I'll send you something from the shelf above the sofa if that counts?
John it's late so I'll do it tomorrow. Hope I can remember how. We have the same clocks and the same kettle. We actually have two fireplaces so I'll do them both. We're not posh - it's an old house.
We put a gas fire in also for the same reason.
So do you want us to send you photos or to write a post ourselves? Will do it tomorrow whatever you want.
Yes which? I've sent you two photos so hope you receive them-otherwise I'll put them up here. BTW I didn't tidy up and now realise I should probably have been more specific. This was supposed to be my morning in bed reading the papers:)
OY - fucking twat with your squeaky wheels - "But I want a link" - yeah, fucking got one and no thank you I see
Bollocks, I'm still pissed
I've posted about my fireplace today!
I'll put mine up later today. It's eight Sunday morning for me; just after lunch for you. Expect to see it before supper your time. (Do I have to tidy it first, or do you want it in all its cluttered glory? - Or, perhaps a 'before' and 'after'??)
I posted a pic of my "not-mantelpiece" in my blog. And yes, I doo need all that crap on my dresser ;)
Oh dear now I've seen all these comments I did a post today-have I got it wrong????
John: are you down the pub? We need a bit of guidance.
Pat, I've been back a while. What guidance do you need?
Goth, well done for STILL being pissed, you truly are a star!
Ruth, I don't believe you're that old!
Shaz, that will do, lol.
IM, whatever messy state it's in!!
Minx, I shall inspect the bedroom one!!
For a start did you receive the photos I sent? If not I'll post them here.
Love your mantelpiece.....great beam, nice wood!
Will get around to taking a pic of ours when I've made a start on the mountain of dirty laundry i have and finished looking for more clues as to what two our teenagers got up to while we were away.....
My mum has exactly the same sort of elephant on her mantlepiece!!! Small world, eh? I have everything on mine that I don't want the cat to get hold of (he's unable to get onto the mantlepiece and therefore it's the one safe place in my flat!)
HC, welcome back, hope you all had a great time!
Mermaid, apparently the elephant came from India, and is carved from ebony.
As I don't have a digital camera and the ones belonging to other members of the household are not charged up I'll just have to describe mine - briefly from left to right:
a rack full of 'papers to be dealt with'
a small statue of a cat with a long sticky-up tail
a photo of my grandparents with their dog, Jack
two candles -matches behind letter rack (we often have power cuts)
a vase of roses from my friend's garden
a bowl carved from wood taken from Norwich Cathedral (legally)
another cat statuette
two postcards from friends on holiday
a model of a sweep (present from friends in France years ago).
The photo of my mum is missing because one of the cats knocked it off and broke the glass.
Above the mantelpiece is a large mirror and beside the fireplace are two more cats - presents from friends.
Loved your photos John. What an original idea for a post
Sandy, xx
I mean it sounds so simple really, take a picture of your fireplace, doesn't it. Have sent it John, after being licked to death by Gorehounds, mithered by infants who don't realise that I'm 'creating' then me batteries ran out, well not mine personally....
Jon m,It came through a treat!
Ooh, a wotsit, a challenge of sorts? I'll do that tomorrow, I think :) on me blog - nice one john.g!
Thanks for the guided tour!
I love the beam!! We have one in our house that is similar. Will show you a photo one day, but just back properly from holiday as you know, and still sorting the muddle at the moment. Can finally put your award on my blog though!! THank you!!!
Cailleach, pleasure, I shall visit soon!
Ariel, bless. Where have you been?
Sally, hope you LOT, had a great time!
